Despite the on-pitch action being over for another year for Canadas three MLS teams, there is still plenty to be resolved in the coming weeks as the Whitecaps, Impact and Toronto FC all have crucial decisions to make ahead of the 2014 season. On this weeks blog, I look at three big questions surrounding our MLS clubs. 1. Who is next in Vancouver? When the Whitecaps took the decision not to renew the contract of head coach Martin Rennie after two years with the club, it seemed as though Frank Yallop would be the man to take over the job. However, the former Canada head coach instead became the top man in Chicago with the Fire - a deal that was completed in the space of 24 hours, something that maybe caught Vancouver a little bit by surprise and ruled out a leading contender to replace Rennie. The Whitecaps have now started the interview process. Current assistant coach Carl Robinson should be a leading candidate. Another name in the running is Richie Williams. Marc Weber reported in the Vancouver Province this week that Williams was in Vancouver to meet with club officials about the position. The former New York Red Bulls player and assistant coach is currently head coach of the United States U17 team. Promoting Robinson would be a move that is welcomed by many of the Whitecaps players. Both Canadian Russell Teibert and MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo have given their support to the former Wales international who has plenty of experience in Major League Soccer since joining the league in 2007. He is well-respected around the league as a bright young coaching mind who will go on to be a successful head coach in Major League Soccer. The Whitecaps have a wealth of young talent within their squad and their Residency Program so the new coach must be someone who is capable of developing that talent. Both Robinson and Williams have experience in that area. There is also the possibility of the Whitecaps holding out to see who else becomes available in the coming weeks. Will Sigi Schmid stay in Seattle? Is out-of-contract Jason Kreis really a viable option? With decisions needing to be taken regarding players futures, the Whitecaps need to move swiftly to fill the void if they are to have the maximum time available to prepare properly for next season. 2. Will Marco be back in Montreal? Montreal Impact president Joey Saputo apologized to the MLS family during his post-season press conference earlier this week following his clubs meltdown in Houston a few days earlier. The 3-0 defeat against the Dynamo was hard to take, but the way in which the team lost their heads was a bitter pill to swallow. Finishing with eight men was bad enough, but losing top scorer Marco Di Vaio for the first three games of next season after supplemental discipline was a further kick in the teeth. Whether or not the loss of Di Vaio will be a problem for Marco Schallibaum to deal with remains to be seen. The Swiss coach is keen to come back for another year, but Saputo and Sporting Director Nick De Santis are still unsure whether they want to stick with Schallibaum in 2014. That would have been unthinkable even two months ago, with Montreal still tied for first place in the Eastern Conference as late as mid-September, but the way they plummeted down the standings has raised concerns. Saputo is wise to take his time over the decision instead of making a rash move while the emotion of the playoff exit is still very raw. If Schallibaum isnt back, it would be the third coach in as many years for Montreal. The decision must come down to why Saputo and De Santis believe things went wrong in the closing weeks of the year. In late summer, they were happy with the coach and expected him to lead them into next year. Does the last two months of the season change that? Down the stretch, the Impact were unable to field a settled lineup due to a number of significant injuries. It seemed the squad also struggled to deal with the impact of the added Champions League games in the schedule. That is beyond Schallibaums control, but there were also questions surrounding some personnel decisions as well as some key games where they looked flat. Schallibaum is an intelligent coach and someone who has the respect of many of the players. If given the opportunity to return, I believe he will have learned some key lessons from his first season in MLS, and will come back a stronger, wiser leader next season. 3. Is Torontos DP search nearing an end? Toronto FC supporters have grown tired of broken promises in recent years, especially in the 2013 season when there was plenty of talk about Designated Player signings that wasnt backed up with actions. However, it seems under new MLSE president Tim Leiweke, the club is finally getting close to securing a couple of big name additions. Two of Torontos main targets right now are Italian forward Alberto Gilardino and England striker Jermaine Defoe. Gilardinos agent attended the final match of the season at BMO Field against Montreal a couple of weeks ago, and reports suggest a deal has been agreed upon with the strikers current club Genoa which would see the man who won the World Cup with Italy in 2006 added to the Reds squad at some stage next year. The club is also doing all it can to woo Defoe. The Tottenham Hotspur striker is a former teammate of Reds head coach Ryan Nelsen and when asked about the 31-year-old, Nelsen said he would be a phenomenal signing, speaking in glowing terms about his finishing ability and also his character on and off the pitch. While the additions of Gilardino and Defoe alone would not guarantee a turnaround, they would go a long way to finally giving the long-suffering fans a team capable of challenging for the playoffs. It would give the club two proven goal scorers who have the potential to be prolific in MLS – if they get the service. Thats where new GM Tim Bezbatchenko and Nelsen would have to work hard to ensure they can secure the pieces necessary to give those big name players the opportunity to thrive. While these deals are still not across the finish line, it does seem as if significant progress has been made, and Toronto are closing in on a couple of major signings that would finally provide the fans with something to smile about. MINSK, Belarus - Jaromir Jagr would much rather be in the Stanley Cup playoffs than at the world hockey championship, especially three months removed from the Sochi Olympics. "I thought the young guys from Czech Republic were going to play," Jagr said with a wry smile. "Obviously, they didnt. They took a break." Jagr seemingly never takes a break from hockey and never stops smiling on the ice. At age 42 hes by far the oldest player in the tournament yet the ageless winger has as much fun playing now as he did as a young man. "If it wouldnt be, I wouldnt be playing right now," Jagr said Sunday. "I want to have fun. As long as you have fun, everything is a lot easier. But you have to work hard, you have to love the game, and thats what you do." Jagr, who faces Team Canada on Monday night, is still able to play at a high level because of a unique mix of love for the game, Hall of Fame skill and a tireless, quirky work ethic. Signed on for another season with the New Jersey Devils, Jagr doesnt sound like a man whos close to being ready to hang up his skates. Even now after 1,473 NHL games, 1,755 points and two Stanley Cups, he finds new ways to motivate himself. "Its a big challenge to compete with the young guys," Jagr said. "Its not only physically. "You have to be one step ahead of everybody. Theyre going to be quicker, theyre going to be stronger. But I always have to look for the edge. I always have to think a lot more. Anything I practise, everything I do, I have to think before how to do it. Its a big challenge. Thats what I like about it — just outsmart somebody." Long before Jagr had to outsmart anyone, he oozed the kind of skill that made him an all-star early on in his career. For a very brief time in 1992-93, he was even linemates with Dave Tippett on the Pittsburgh Penguins. "He was a very young guy," the 52-year-old Canadian coach said. "I think I spent a couple shifts on his line and he looked at Scotty Bowman and said, No, next, please. " At the world championships, Jagr is on a line with 20-year-old Tomas Hertl, who flashes the same grin on the ice for practice as his idol. Hertl wasnt even born for Jagrs two Cup victories in Pittsburgh, but as a very young boy growing up in Prague he watched every game of the 1998 Nagano Olympics. Hertl could only dream of making it big like Jagr, let alone playing alongside him. "Its unbelievable because its my idol as small guy," Hertl said Saturday. "Im learning. I watch too many games and YouTube and his shot is unbelievable, too many goals." More than that, Jagrs longevity is unbelievable. He has played for the Penguins, Washington Capitals, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins and New Jersey. This past season, Jagr was New Jerseys scoring leader with 24 goals and 43 assists. The mutual comfort between Jagr and the Devils organization led him to signing another one-year deal to return for 2014-15. "Im not surprised. I think he really enjoyed the year," Devils coach and Team Canada assistant Peter DeBoer said. "I think he came in and he really is taking it year-to-year at this point in his career. "He played a big role for us, felt important, was a big part of any of the successes we had during the year and I think he wants to do that again." Jagr said this, his ninth world championship, would be his last — but dont rule out maybe one more run when its in the Czech Republic next year. And certainly dont start the farewell tour thinking 2014-15 is definitely his last go-round in the NHL. "I dont know." he said. "If Im gonna play good, why? I love the game." Jaroslav Spacek loved the game, too, but the defencemans body gave out on him and caused him to retire in 2012. Hes two years younger than Jagr but is now an assistant coach for the Czech team and still gets a kick out of seeing Jagr still playing. "Hes using all his free time to work out and get ready for the games," Spacek said. "Hes got no family so hes putting all pressure on himself to be the best hockey player as he can be. "Thats the one thing hes working on it every day. He can get ready for the season even for the world championship, he can take a couple days off but then he comes and works hard. I never see anybody like that." Infamous for skating late at night and sometimes with weights on his body, Jagr is what Tippett would classify as a "hockey junkie." Seeing up close how those things worked, DeBoer wont question any of his techniques. "I marvel at him every day," he said. "He has some different thoughts on his own training and what makes him go. I can tell you theres very few guys, you can probably count on one hand, that are playing at a level that hes playing at at the age hes at." To continue playing at that level, Jagr consciously makes decisions to maximize preparation. Beyond joking hes here because younger players werent, he saw the world championships as a way to help him get ready for next season. "For my body, my age, to have five months or four months without the ice I think would be too long and would be tough to come back and be ready right away," he said. Jagr has to think about those things, but he doesnt feel like a 42-year-old. Being around Hertl and other young players helps him play down in age as he adjusts. But at some point he wont be able to play anymore. When that time is right, Jagr expects to be able to feel it. "You know," he said. "I think you know. Im not ready yet." Follow @SWhyno on Twitter. (SportsNetwork.com) - The Carolina Hurricanes are continuing to make their poor start to the season a distant memory. The suddenly-streaking Canes eye up a fifth straight victory on Saturday night as they visit the rival Washington Capitals. Carolina got off to the worst start in franchise history with eight straight defeats to open the campaign. However, the Hurricanes have now countered that 0-6-2 start with a four-game winning streak, one that was extended with last nights 3-2 overtime victory against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Elias Lindholm scored the winning goal with 38 seconds left in overtime. That came after Carolina had failed to score on its first six chances on the man advantage in the game. Victor Rask and Jeff Skinner scored for the Hurricanes, while Cam Ward stopped 29 shots in the win. We knew they were going to come back hungry, and they were, said Carolina forward Eric Staal. They played hard. It was physical and tight at times, but I liked the resiliency we showed. We stayed with it and continued to battle. Carolina now has a chance to win five straight for the first time since Dec. 31-Jan. 9 of last season and will give Anton Khudobin the start tonight. He is 3-1-0 lifetime versus the Capitals with a 2.74 goals against average and .913 save percentage. Washington will take aim at a second straight win as it halted a five-game slide with Friday nights 3-2 triumph over the Chicago Blackhawks. Braden Holtby made 38 saves and the Capitals scored three late goals in the second period. Joel Ward, Andre Burakovsky and Marcus Johansson scored in the final five minutes of the second period for the Capitals, who had posted an 0-4-1 mark over their slide. It just goes to show how fast things can turn around in a game, said Ward, whose winning goal came with 4.4 seconds left in the frame. It kind of got switched around for us because weve had a few games where weve had the lead and given it up. It is unknown if Holtby will start again tonight or if the Capitals will turn to former Hurricanes second-round draft pick Justin Peters. Holtby is 5-3-0 with a 2.23 GAA and .940 save percentage in his career versus the Hurricanes, who took drafted Peters in 2004. Peters made 68 appearances with 58 starts over parts of five seasons with Carolina. He played in a career-high 21 games last season, going 7-9-4 with a 2.50 GAA and .919 save percentage. The Hurricanes won three of their five meetings with the Capitals a season ago, with all three wins coming in Washington. They have won five of their past seven trips to D.C. overall. Jason Pominville and Erik Haula also scored for the Wild, who are 9-3-1 in their last 13 games after ending December with six straight losses. Kuemper is 6-2-1 with a 1.85 goals-against average in nine starts since getting recalled from the minors on Jan. 2. Back indoors following their 3-0 victory at Dodger Stadium over the Kings on Saturday, the Ducks lost for only the fourth time in their last 25 games after coming in an NHL-best 39-10-5. Dustin Penner and Mathieu Perreault scored for Anaheim, and Jonas Hiller stopped 29 shots. After going 0 for 21 on the power play in its previous eight games, Minnesota took a 2-1 lead 13 seconds into the second period while Penner was off for slashing Jonas Brodin. Granlund cruised down the slot and redirected Parises cross-ice feed past Hillers stick for his fourth goal. Both of Minnesotas third-period goals came on deflections of shots by defenceman Marco Scandella from the left point -- one by Parise with 13:25 remaining, the other by Haula with 10:39 to play. Pominville opened the scoring at 7:57 of the first with his 21st of the season, banking the puck in off Hillers left leg from behind the net after Granlunds one-timer from the high slot was blocked by Matt Beleskey. Penner tied it at 18:13 with his 13th goal, beating Kuemper high to the glove side with a one-timer from the left circle after Ryan Getzlaf set him up from behind the net.dddddddddddd. But Penner went to the penalty box just 19 seconds later, setting up the power play that resulted in Granlunds goal. Defenceman Luca Sbisa returned to the Ducks lineup for the first time since Nov. 22 after missing 29 games because of a torn tendon in his right hand, and picked up the first two penalties of the game -- both for hooking in the opening period. The Ducks got their first power-play opportunity at 7:34 of the second after a holding call against Mike Rupp, but looked as though they were the ones who were short-handed. Hiller stoned Matt Cooke on a 5-foot wrist shot to the glove side, and the Wild had a 2-on-1 moments later before Ryan Suters 40-foot wrist shot from the left circle slid just wide of the right post. Anaheim began an 11-game stretch in which all but one will be on home ice, including five straight at Honda Center coming out of the Olympic break. NOTES: Anaheim D Cam Fowler blocked a slap shot by Nino Niederreiter with 35 seconds left in the second period and slumped to the ice, but continued playing while favouring his right leg until the horn sounded. MOSCOW - Reading striker Pavel Pogrebnyak was included in Russia coach Fabio Capellos preliminary squad for the World Cup on Monday. Pogrebnyak made the 30-man list despite not having played for Russia since Capello took over as coach in 2012. But there was no recall for former Arsenal forward Andrei Arshavin or former Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko. Up front, Pogrebnyak faces competition from regular strikers Alexander Kerzhakov and Alexander Kokorin. Midfielder Roman Shirokov, who has captained Russia in each game the team has played since October, made the cut despite being loaned out by Zenit St. Petersburg following a reported dispute with club officials. CSKA Moscow goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev and centre back Sergei Ignashevich are among seven to have been on the Russia squad that reached the semifinals of the 2008 European Championship, widely considered the countrys greatest football achievement since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Four players — Terek Grozny defender Andrei Semyonov, FC Krasnodar midfielder Yuri Gazinsky, Rubin Kazan midfielder Pavel Mogilevets and Amkar Perm forward Maxim Kannunikov — have never played for Russia. The 30-man squad will be cut down to a final 23 by June 2, 10 days before play starts in Brazil. Russia, the 2018 World Cup host, will face South Korea, Belgium and Algeria in the group stage in Brazil. The Russians will play home friendlies against Slovakia on May 26 and Morocco on June 6, with a match at Norway on May 31. ___ Squad: Goalkeepers: Igor Akinfeev (CSKA Moscow), Yuri Lodygin (Zenit St. Petersburg), Sergei Ryzhikov (Rubin Kazan) Defenders: Alexander Anyukov (Zenit St. Petersburg), Alexei Berezutsky (CSKA Moscow), Vasily Berezutsky (CSKA Moscow), Sergei Ignashevich (CSKA Moscow), Georgy Shchennikov (CSKA Moscow), Vladimir Granat (Dynamo Moscow), Alexei Kozlov (Dynamo Moscow), Andrei Eshchenko (Anzhi Makhachkala), Dmitry Kombarov (Spartak Moscow), Andrei Semyonov (Terek Grozny) Midfielders: Igor Denisov (Dynamo Moscow), Yuri Zhirkov (Dynamo Moscow), Alan Dzagoev (CSKA Moscow), Yuri Gazinsky (FC Krasnodar), Roman Shirokov (FC Krasnodar), Denis Glushakov (Spartak Moscow), Pavel Mogilevets (Rubin Kazan), Viktor Faizulin (Zenit St. Petersburg), Oleg Shatov (Zenit St. Petersburg) Forwards: Vladimir Bystrov (Zenit St. Petersburg), Alexander Kerzhakov (Zenit St. Petersburg), Artyom Dzyuba (FC Rostov), Alexei Ionov (Dynamo Moscow), Alexander Kokorin (Dynamo Moscow), Maxim Kannunikov (Amkar Perm), Pavel Pogrebnyak (Reading), Alexander Samedov (Lokomotiv Moscow) Yeezy Schuhe Großhandel . The Hurricanes will shoot for the win column once again when they host the Arizona Coyotes in Saturdays battle at PNC Arena. Carolina has opened the season on an 0-6-2 slide and recently ended a five- game road trip with four consecutive regulation losses. The Canes were outscored by a 20-6 margin over the course of the road trip and picked up their lone point of the swing in a 2-1 shootout loss to the New York Rangers on Oct. 16. The good news is Carolina should be well-rested for tonights tilt, having been idle since dropping Tuesdays 4-1 decision in Vancouver. The time off will allow forwards Patrick Dwyer and Nathan Gerbe to return from lower-body injuries. Dwyer has been out since Oct. 11, while Gerbe hasnt played since Oct. 16. The return of Dwyer and Gerbe, however, is not good news for Canes forward Alexander Semin, who expects to be a healthy scratch on Saturday. Semin, a 22- goal scorer last season, has two assists through eight games this season and he was benched for a large part of the third period on Tuesday after taking an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Hed played enough, coach Bill Peters told NHL.com after the game. I dont think we need to take undisciplined penalties when we are trying to dig out of a hole, right? Youre in a hole. Quit digging. Jiri Tlusty scored the only goaal in Tuesdays loss against the Canucks, while Cam Ward was tagged for three goals on 24 shots.dddddddddddd We werent good enough in any area, and the result is a 4-1 loss, Peters said. Arizona gives the Hurricanes a good opportunity to pick up win No. 1, as the Coyotes enter Saturday with losses in five of their last six games. Dave Tippetts club also has yet to win in four road games this season and is 0-2 at the start of a four-game trek. The Coyotes were slammed 7-3 by the Tampa Bay Lightning to open the trip on Tuesday and then dropped a 2-1 decision two nights later against Florida. Former Coyotes forward Scottie Upshall notched the game-winning goal on Thursday, as he came out of the penalty box with 9:04 remaining in regulation and beat Mike Smith on the ensuing breakaway. It was Arizonas first regulation loss to the Panthers since Feb. 10, 2007. Smith made 24 saves for an Arizona club that fell to 1-4-1 over its past six games. Martin Hanzal scored his teams lone goal Thursday, converting on the power play late in the first period. Our execution has to improve, Tippett said. Carolina has won four of the last seven overall meetings versus the Coyotes, but Arizona has won three straight and five of the past six encounters at PNC Arena. Smith has started seven of Arizonas nine games this season, but he could get a breather this weekend from backup Devan Dubnyk. The Coyotes are also playing Sunday against Washington. ' ' '

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Peyton Manning wants to clear up a couple of things about his recent visit to Tuscaloosa, Ala., that raised eyebrows at NFL headquarters and the hackles of some Tennessee fans. The five-time MVP said hes always been driven to improve, a quality thats even more essential at age 38, and thats why he met with Alabama coach Nick Saban a couple of weeks ago. Saban shared defensive tips with Manning, who gave him pointers on the hurry-up offence that has befuddled the Crimson Tide. Saban said Denver offensive co-ordinator Adam Gase also visited his staff that week. NFL rules prohibit players and their coaches from meeting before the start of off-season workout programs, and thats why the NFL said it would look into the matter. Following the Broncos first organized workout Monday, however, Manning insisted that he and Gase didnt break any rules because they didnt meet with each other in Tuscaloosa. "Yeah, that didnt happen. We know what the rules were. Like I said, I was there on an independent project, and Adam was as well," Manning said. Saban has also said that Manning and Gase didnt meet with his coaches at the same time. Gase and Saban go way back: Gase got his start in coaching under Saban in the 1990s at Michigan State and followed him to LSU as a graduate assistant. As for fans from the quarterbacks alma mater who might be upset that he met with a rival coach from another SEC team, Manning said he still bleeds orange. "Obviously, I have been to Tennessee doing the same thing for the past 16 years. Ill do that, going to make it 17 years in a row, going back to Knoxville. Hopefully that covers me as far as being loyal to my university," Manning said. "Most of the other places, I go just one time. So Ive got 17 years at one place, so I think its pretty clear where my loyalties lie. "The projects I did this year were to help the Denver Broncos and to help me. That still is what my job is, to make myself a better player." The NFL rule prohibiting players and coaches from meeting before the start of the voluntary off-season workouts, the first two weeks of which are limited to strength and conditioning work and rehabilitation, were installed with the latest collective bargaining agreement a few years ago. Its designed to prevent players from feeling pressured to meet with coaching staffs during whats supposed to be their free time in the off-season. Players and coaches often get together in casual settings and NFL coaches often meet with college coaches. Mannings appetite for improvement is what led to his trip this off-season to Alabama. He also visited Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. "Theres different things that Ive done throughout my career in the off-season that Ive sought out someone to talk to, something to study to try to make myself a better quarterback," he said. "I believe in this league you either get better or you get worse -- you dont stay the same. I know that has gotten a lot of attention, but that is something Ive done throughout my career. "I certainly know the rules, but I know theres no rule that says a player cant get better -- at least I havent read that one. Thats what I was trying to do and I believe that is important, especially as you get older, in the off-season to try to seek out some things to try to make yourself a better player." Seeing the leagues only five-time MVP trying to improve impressed new defensive end DeMarcus Ware, who was lured to Denver by a three-year, $30 million offer from general manager John Elway and the chance to play with Manning, whos intent on getting back to the Super Bowl this season following the Broncos 43-8 loss to Seattle in February. "Sometimes it doesnt matter about accolades, it doesnt matter if you were MVP or not, its what can I do to really get better for next season?" Ware said. "Peytons one of those types of guys that puts in that effort, not just on the field but off the field, trying to figure out, What can I do to get better? Because he has a bad taste in his mouth from the last season and he doesnt want it to happen again." LONDON -- England was forced into a late change for the Six Nations match against Italy on Saturday, with prop Joe Marler dropping out to be with his partner ahead of the birth of their first child. Mako Vunipola was promoted from the reserves, with Matt Mullan called up to the bench on Thursday. "It is important that Joe is with his partner at this exciting time," England coach Stuart Lancaster said. "Family must always come first." The other change to the matchday squad of 23 saw centre Manu Tuilagi named on the bench in place of Alex Goode after recovering from a pectoral muscle injury that kept him out for six months. He is expected to make his first England appearance in a year in Rome. The English still have a chance to win the Six Nations if they defeat Italy and France beat Ireland. However, they must also overhaul Irelands points superiority should the Irish win in Paris. Tuilagis return was widely expected after England coaches even considered including him in their squad for the crunch game against Wales until Lancaster decided it would be safer to wait one more week. England hopes Tuilagis power will be a decisive factor in Rome as Lancasters team hopes to pile on the points. "The Wales result was very significant for us but we need to finish the tournament well in Rome," Lancaster said. "We have had a tight turnaround and the key this week has been to manage the players recovery and get them in the best shape for what will be a tough match against Italy." ------ England: Mike Brown, Jack Nowell, Luther Burrell, Billy Twelvetrees, Jonny May, Owen Farrell, Danny Care; Ben Morgan, Chris Robshaw (captain), Tom Wood, Courtney Lawes, Joe Launchbury, David Wilson, Dylan Hartley, Mako Vunipola. SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- After falling behind by 10 points at the outset against No. 4 Syracuse, Indiana coach Tom Crean had his Hoosiers right where he wanted at halftime -- down by just two baskets. Then he went into the locker room and didnt like what he heard from his youthful Hoosiers -- silence. "Frankly, the halftime locker room for a team that had come on the road with the fourth-ranked team in the country and was going toe-to-toe with them, I read it right there," Crean said. "I dont know if its the inexperience. I dont know if its the anxiety. I dont know if there were too many guys that didnt believe they could win the game. I dont know if the guys were shocked that we were in the game, but that was as poor a second half performance spirit-wise ... that Ive been a part of in a long time." The Orange used a 12-0 spurt to break open a tie game and extended the surge to 25-4 behind their backcourt of Trevor Cooney and freshman Tyler Ennis, who combined for 38 points, nine assists and eight steals. After Indianas Noah Vonleh tied it at 33-all early in the second half, Syracuse began its run to take command and incite the crowd. Dajuan Coleman started it with a putback and Cooney followed with a steal and 3-pointer, then went 3 of 3 from the free throw line after being fouled on another 3-point attempt. C.J. Fairs driving layup with 13:18 left gave the Orange a 45-33 lead. Ennis had three steals during the spurt and the Orange forced the Hoosiers into a shot-clock violation as they could muster nothing offensively. "Ive never been part of a game where a team was as different in one half as they were in the other," Crean said. "The first half, after getting down 10-0, we started to play the game the way we practiced, the way we prepared. We wanted to get the ball inside. We had their front line in foul trouble. We were getting to the foul line. We were right where we needed to be. "We wanted to continue to build on what we were doing in the first half and we couldnt have been more opposite. Three of our first four shots were 3s. We got away from what was working. We let them get momentum." Indiana (6-2) had only lost, 59-58, to No. 12 Connecticut at Madison Square Garden in the championship game of the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Wounded Warrior Project. Ennis hit a 3 and had a steal and layup, and Cooney followed with a 3 to boost the lead to 53-36 midway through the second half. Seconds later, Cooney was slammed into the stanchion on a fast break by Austin Etherington, drawing a flagrant foul on the play. "Because its Indiana, its kind of like a rivalry, and theyre a really good team," said Cooney, who scored 21 points. "We wanted to come out and prove to everyone that were a good team." Syracuse, fresh from winning the Maui Invitational, registered seven blocked shots, 10 steals and matched the nations top team on the glass with 29 rebounds with just a 12-11 deficit on the offensive glass. Indiana shot 15 of 41 (36.6 per cent) and was 6 of 13 from the field in the second half in getting outscored 36-23. "We finally got our offence going a little bit, made a couple of baskets, but our defence was really the difference for the first time this year," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. "Coming back from Hawaii, I thought the way everybody held their legs was pretty good. Our energy level was pretty good." So, too, was that of the crowd of 26,414, whose deafening roars in the second half rocked the Carrier Dome as the Orange assumed control. "We just get up for these games," Ennis said. Syracuse (8-0) has won 46 straight nonconference games at home. "The first three, four possessions. Im not a big believer in the first 5 minutes, but this one was," Crean said. "This is one of those games where the first few possessions were going to be absolutely crucial in the second half, and they were. And it totally went the other way. Im unbelievably disappointed in the lack of fight in the second half." Fair finished with 15 points but had to sit 5 minutes in the second half after picking up his fourth foul, one of four Syracuse players who finished the game with four. Vonleh had 17 points for the Hoosiers, 13 from the free throw line, and Yogi Ferrell added 12 points, only three in the second half -- a 3-pointer with 1:59 remaining. Indiana came in leading the nation averaging 50.3 rebounds a game and in rebound margin at plus-18. Indiana was fifth in field goal percentage defence (35.1) and the Orange shot 51.1 per cent (24 of 47). LeBron James Shoes Outlet . The job now involves finding a way to slow down Andrew Luck. The Colts (5-3) and Luck will face the Giants (3-4) at MetLife Stadium on Monday night with both teams looking to rebound.Indianapolis is coming off a 51-34 loss to Pittsburgh, while the Giants are returning from a bye week seeking to snap a two-game losing streak that featured one-sided losses to NFC East rivals Philadelphia and Dallas. Its time for both teams to start jelling with the stretch run on tap. This is exciting, Giants quarterback Eli Manning said. We have a good opportunity ahead of us. The way we have played to start the year, we have made it tough on ourselves, but we have to get hot. All we can do is worry about this next game. We have to handle our business and start playing at a higher level. The Giants need to that on both sides of the ball if they expect to get past the Colts, who have the NFLs top-ranked offence and the No. 1 rated passing game with Luck at quarterbackNew York has been outscored 58-21 in its last two games as the offence failed to make big plays and the defence has not stopped the run. Before the loss to the Steelers, and Luck and the Colts made big plays on both sides of the ball in winning five straight games.Luck has been outstanding. He set a team record last weekend, throwing for at least 300 yards in his sixth straight game, breaking Peyton Mannings mark.He has a great competitive fire about him, Colts coach Chuck Pagano said of his humble quarterback. He loves winning. He is not afraid of hard work. We all know the talent you can see on tape. He is big and strong. He is athletic and obviously a very bright guy. His intangibles are off the charts. The question remains can Eli Manning and the Giants new West Coast offence put up points against a suddenly suspect Indy defence. New York will not have No. 1 halfback Rashad Jennings (knee) and it is still looking to prove it can overcome the loss of explosive receiver Victor Cruz for the season with another knee injury. The bottom line is the Giants are facing missing the playoffs for the third straight year with nine games to go in the regular season.ddddddddddddIts your guys job to panic, and you guys do that very well, Giants veteran defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka said to reporters. For us, theres parity in the league, you can talk about all of those things, injuries or whatever. The fact remains that we have a lot of games left on the schedule, weve got championship calibre talent in here, I still believe that 100 per cent, so we go out, we work, we put wins together and all of a sudden the perception changes. Some things to watch in this half-Manning Bowl:GIANTS DBs: Starting cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie has been bothered by back and hamstring injuries in recent weeks. It remains to be seen if the bye week helped him get healthy. If he is still limited, the Giants are really in trouble. Zack Bowman would get more playing time and it might even force the defence to use Mike Harris, signed off the Lions practice squad this week.COLTS Defence: A week after shutting out Cincinnati, Indianapolis allowed Pittsburgh 51 points and the Steelers had 639 yards in total offence. Ben Roethlisberger threw for 522 yards and six touchdowns, both franchise records. Indianapolis pressure defence failed to register a sack after getting 20 in the previous five-game winning streak.BACK TO THE MEADOWLANDS: Colts halfback Ahmad Bradshaw and receiver Hakeem Nicks were drafted by the Giants and spent a combined 11 seasons with the team. Both were members of the Super Bowl championship team in February 2012. Bradshaw joined the Colts last season, while Nicks was signed this year.FUTURE GAMES: Indianapolis has a game lead over Houston in the AFC South heading into the weekend. The Texans are home against Philadelphia (5-2). A Colts win would at least maintain the lead going into a bye week and give them breathing room heading into a game against New England. The Giants have Seattle, San Francisco and Dallas on tap after the Colts.HILTON WATCH: Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton leads the NFL with 866 yards receiving, a 16.3-yard average. His 53 catches are a team high, 15 more than Reggie Wayne. The Giants leading receiver is Rueben Randle, who has 34 catches for 321 yards, a 9.4-yard average. Giants general manager Jerry Reese complained about the teams lack of big plays on offence this season.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFLx ' ' '

The Day in 100 Words or Less It was another delicious day at the World Cup. The trends continued, and oh boy please let them continue on and on: Space in zone 14 for number 10s to exploit, clinical counter attacks, high defensive lines, poor defending, surprise results and lots and lots of goals. International football desperately needs a really good World Cup. At the moment it is providing a really great one. England 1-2 Italy - What a wonderful game of football. - Great teams can exploit an opponents weakness and Cesare Prandellis men did exactly that by working many of their attacks down the right. Matteo Darmian and Antonio Candreva tore England to shreds on that flank. Yes, Leighton Baines looked very average on a big stage but he wasnt helped. - Wayne Rooney, asked to play the left side of a three inside a 4-2-3-1, struggled terribly defending his flank. Roy Hodgson felt he did very well but if that was the case what was the reason for switching him to the right at the start of the second half? - Rooney will become the scapegoat the English press need to feast on but for a supposed world class player it is hard to feel sympathy for a man who has created a bar that is higher than most in that country. Few genuine world class players (which Rooney is not) do not play in four different positions during a game which is what the Manchester United man did, flipping from the left to the right back to the left and then up front as England made their subs. For me, he should be played up top as a striker but it is clear his manager has very little faith in him at the moment. - Rooney, who wasted a great chance by blasting wide on 61 minutes, has now played nine games in World Cups, combining for 685 minutes. He has more red cards (1) than goals (0). - Rooneys positioning aside it is difficult to think of anything Hodgson could have done differently. His team simply isnt near as good as Italy. He had no answer for the technical brilliance of Italys central midfield so he played his own game, counter attacking with pace. - That was how they scored their goal, from this position (below) when it took five seconds for Sterling-Rooney-Daniel Sturridge to make it 1-1. - Italy were excellent. Andrea Pirlo was even better than he was two years ago at Euro 2012 and alongside Daniele De Rossi and Marco Verratti were able to dictate the flow of the game. - England defended well and countered but it was difficult to play that style for the entire game and once again England didnt score in the second half (eighth time in their last nine at major tournaments). - Italy did and it came from a break down the right. Darmian hugged the touchline while the runs of his team-mates already had England nervous as Baines points... Darmian plays Candreva in behind and Englands backline is stretched... Claudio Marchisio makes an intelligent run to distract Glen Johnson. Candreva cuts back and prepares a great cross for Mario Balotelli to head home the winning goal. Colombia 2-0 Greece - The wonderfully proud country of Colombia had waited 5832 days to see their team play at a World Cup. Few things are worth waiting that long for but no Colombian in Belo Horizonte cared anything about the past on this day. - A year ago they were considered a contender for this World Cup. It scarred the country terrorized by high expectations of 1994 that ended in tragic circumstances. A year on, they were written off by some. Now it was their time to shine. - The stadium was a sea of yellow and on the pitch the game was played at South American pace. For the third successive day a South American team scored early, and when Pablo Armeros shot bundled into the back of the net on five minutes it was the earliest goal of the World Cup so far. - Armero got the glory but the architect was James Rodriguez. Without Radamel Falcao, manager Jose Pekerman misses a star striker but it does allow him to play five in midfield, something you cannot do with Falcao in the side. This meant James was placed deeper in a number ten role where he was given license to roam all over the field. - On the opening goal he picked up the ball deep and had the vision and guile to play a gorgeous ball into space for Juan Cuadrado to run on to. The moment he pinned the ball deep he sprinted into the box and within eight seconds was in the box, receiving the ball and drawing defenders towards him. Moments after this shot he dummied the ball and allowed Armero to slot the goal home. - Greece were forced to come out of their comfort zone and were the best team for 30 minutes in the first half. This is important because their World Cup is not solely based one match. How they react to this will be vital. Uruguay 1-3 Costa Rica - It is the World Cup that keeps on giving. A stunning result in Fortaleza has thrown a cat amongst the pigeons inside group D and no one can say Costa Rica didnt deserve it. - They were 7:1 underdogs heading into this game but they showed just how silly those odds looked. They never looked unsettled after going a goal down, through an Edinson Cavani penalty, and would defend brilliantly when asked. - At times they played a 5-5-0 formation with Bryan Ruiz and Joel Campbell dropping deep and demanding the ball. It was some contrast to Uruguays front two who couldnt get in the game. - World Cups do not care one bit for reputations. They create them. Many times we have seen old, slow players passed their prime be chewed up by the biggest stage and a day after Iker Casillas faltered for Spain, Diego Forlan did the same for Uruguay. - With no Luis Suarez (knee), Uruguays over-reliance on the front two meant the 2010 Golden Ball winner was thrust back into the limelight. It seemed like a big gamble by Oscar Tabarez and so it proved. Uruguay have a pedestrian midfield four, their wide players offer little, meaning the front two needs to click. Forlans place in the side pushed Edinson Cavani further forward and the two were invisible. Cavani is wasted as a pure target man. - It was a night that exposed Uruguays flaws. Much of their success has come against teams who have a lot of the ball who they can counter against. They couldnt do that today and, for once, when asked to be the team that dictated the match they buckled. - Fernando Muslera in goal is pathetic at this level; his centre-backs have no confidence in him or each other at set plays and dont have any help defensively – outside of Cavani – when clearing. The alarm bells were ringing in that area at half-time and Costa Rica exposed them in the second half. - Joel Campbell was great and benefited from a superb cross to score the first and laid in Marco Urena to complete the rout to make it 3-1. In between, Oscar Duarte wasnt tracked on a free kick and scored at the back post although he was inches offside. Ivory Coast 2-1 Japan - It was played while many slept in their beds or stumbled over their pint glass but if you missed it, you missed another good one. - For the fourth time already at this World Cup a team came from a losing position to take the lead. - Another trend at this World Cup has been momentum and, down 1-0 in the 64th minute Ivory Coast rocked Japan back, through the lively right back Serge Aurier. The Toulouse man, destined for a move to the Premier League, produced two outstanding crosses into the box in three minutes and headers from Wilfried Bony and Gervinho changed the game. - Japan, ahead through a Keisuke Honda bullet, couldnt find another gear. Much like Croatia, Spain and Uruguay they had been rocked by a comeback and were not the same when behind. - Yaya Toure doesnt look himself, however, and a funny moment took place in the first half when the ball from a teammate hit him in the face. He shook it off without a problem but I wondered if his mate didnt care too much for birthday cakes. Man of the Day Nominees: Mark Geiger – The World Cup needed a good referee to step up and get things right. The American, who was helped by Canadian Joe Fletcher as his assistant, did exactly that in the first day of the game. James Rodriguez – The Monaco magician was 7-years-old the last time Colombia played a World Cup. He has performed wonderfully in the Champions League but this was his big moment. He is so important to Jose Pekerman, allowing him to play five in midfield and be that deep lying playmaker, making up a midfield three, while also providing the decisive runs into the final third. His passing map (46 of 52) was special. (Stats powered by Opta) Joel Campbell – We should be careful using small sample sizes to come to conclusions about the club game but no one can convince me that Yaya Sanogo is a better option at Arsenal, the club that Campbell belongs to. Andrea Pirlo – Nothing he does should surprise anyone any more. England couldnt find a plan to counter him so they simply didnt even try this time. Antonio Candreva – His tactical intelligence was marvelous. It is one thing for a coach to set out a team to play a certain way; it is something different to have his players recognize key developments in-game. The winner: Andrea Pirlo – Candreva may have changed the game, Balotelli and Claudio Marchisio may have scored the goals but it was Pirlo who was the maestro and who everyone was talking about. It doesnt matter what country you support, this is the last time you will see the magician at a World Cup. Simply sit back and enjoy him while you can. What Comes Next? The Serb pair fought hard and appeared even, forcing a tiebreak in the first set and winning the second. But Zimonjic and Krajinovic failed to convert two break points at 5-5 in the third set, allowing the Swiss to regain confidence and cruise to victory in the fourth set. On Friday, Swiss stars Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka won the opening singles. Federer was making his first Davis Cup appearance since 2012. Serbia, last years finalist, was playing without its three top players, Novak Djokovic, Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki. The second-ranked Djokovic decided to rest after losing to Wawrinka in the Australian Open quarterfinals, while Tipsarevic was nursing a heel injury and Troicki was serving a 12-month doping ban for failing to appear at a test. That meant 102nd-ranked Dusan Lajovic was Serbias highest-ranked team member. Coach Obradovic said he hoped the top players will be back next year. ASHBURN, Va. -- Michael Vick says its taken him 10 years to learn when to slide. Robert Griffin III figures hell have it down pat just a few days from now. "Monday night," the Washington Redskins quarterback said Wednesday, adding a big smile as he spoke to reporters. "I mean, you guys have been talking to me about it for eight months. I think its ingrained in my head now. Ill be getting down on Monday night." After eight months of rehab on his reconstructed right knee, its finally all-systems-go for Griffin to play in the prime-time Week 1 opener against Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles. Griffin said theres a chance he could be even more emotional than when he made his NFL debut a year ago. His stated goal: "Play like you were never gone." But not necessarily play the same. This is the second time Griffin has returned from major knee surgery. He said the first time around, after he was hurt playing for Baylor in 2009, was "a lot more scary" because he didnt know if would be his old self again. When he did return, he didnt change how he played. This time, he says he will. After missing all or part of four games in his rookie NFL season because of injuries, he almost has to. "Its a different mentality in college," Griffin said. "Youre trying to get to the pros, and there are lot more different things you can do at that level that are frowned upon at this level. I just know Ive got to be safe and slide and still play fearless. Im not going out there and play scared." Changing the mindset isnt easy. Vick, 33, is a decade older than Griffin and has had more than his share of injuries while making his name as a run-pass quarterback. Coaches and teammates have implored him to learn to slide for years, and only now does it sound as if the message is finally getting through. "What Ive learned is you have to be cautious," Vick said, "because these guys in this league, they hit so hard, and we only weigh about 210 pounds, 215 pounds. And these guys are taking all types of angles on us, and we dont even see them sometimes, so its important for us to protect ourselves and be conscious of where we are on the field and most importantly understand what we mean to our football team. "It happens over time, and I can honestly tell you I didnt learn it until this year. This preseason was the most I got down and slid, and ran with a sense of getting down and not trying to score all the time. I think once you tell yourself thats what youre going to do, then you kind of ingrain it in your mind." But instincts are hard to unlearn. Vick went also headfirst -- instead of feet-first -- more than once during this preseason. Griffin sat out the preseason and was cleared for Week 1 last week by Dr. James Andrews, although coach Mike Shanahan said at the time that Andrews also had unspecified "concerns." Andrews later contradicted the coach, saying there were "no concerns." Shanahan then said the "concerns" were discussed among doctor, coach and player on Sunday but didnt reveal what they are. Griffin declined to be drawn in the fray Wednesday, other than to say that he also had no concerns about his knee. "Bottom line," Griffin said, "is Im ready to go." Notes: NT Barry Cofield has an enormous cast to protect the broken bone in his right hand and will probably have to wear it in the game. He says it wont affect his performance, but one problem is that he cant buckle his own chinstrap. He says he seeks help from a different teammate before every play so as not to burden any one person. Three points shy of a triple-double, Stephenson heard the crowd boo his removal and chant moments later for his return. Things are going so well for the Indiana Pacers that they can contemplate personal milestones and finally turn their attention to a difficult road trip awaiting them in early December. "I knew we would be a good team," Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. "They are driven and hungry. Were off to a good start." Paul George scored 23 points and Roy Hibbert added 13 and eight rebounds to easily lead surging Indiana past injury hampered Washington 93-73 on Friday night. The Pacers won their sixth straight and extended their best start in franchise history to 15-1. The Wizards (7-9) snapped a three-game winning streak and lost their 11th straight game in Indianapolis. They committed 18 turnovers, shot 40 per cent from the field and went 6-of-18 from 3-point range. Star point guard John Wall struggled badly, rarely attacked the rim and finished with eight points on 4-of-14 shooting. Marcin Gortat led Washington with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Trevor Ariza scored 14. The Pacers shut out a transition attack that came in ranked second in the NBA. After averaging 18.6 points a game on the fast break, Washington had none against the defensive-minded Pacers. "When we did get in the open court we turned the ball over," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. "They got back and jammed the lane. That was the opposite of how we wanted to play." Washington had won five of six before injuries finally caught up. The team announced shortly before the game that starting power forward Nene would sit due to a sore right Achilles tendon. Also missing were starting shooting guard Bradley Beal and prized rookie Otto Porter, the No. 3 pick in the draft. "That took a little bit out of us," Wittman said. "Down seven (43-36) at half, It might have been one of our worst halves. I could tell they just didnt have the vibe. We were drained." As usual, the Pacers stifled spirits and took control in the third quarter. They entered the day outscoring opponents by an average of 6.7 points in the third and followed that script once more by ooutscoring Washington 26-20 to carry a 69-56 lead to the fourth.dddddddddddd The gap only widened from there. "We just come out focused," George said. "We really are dialed in. We are working on that dead spot in the second quarter. Hopefully we can shore that up on our road trip." Stephenson departed with seven points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. He made multiple flashy passes that drew oohs and aahs before Vogel replaced him with Orlando Johnson. On Wednesday in Charlotte, Stephenson had 15 points and 10 rebounds. He had the first two triple-doubles of his career earlier this month. Vogel knew bigger things are ahead. "I love to see guys get triple-doubles. But you cant make moves that compromise the next game," Vogel said. The Pacers begin a five-game road trip against the Western Conference on Sunday at the Los Angeles Clippers. Four of the five opponents are above .500 and the slate ends with games against Oklahoma City and reigning conference champ San Antonio. Vogel had hushed talk of the trip to help the team focus. Now, Indiana is ready to test its league-best record against other top teams. "We must continue to play our game on the road trip," forward David West said. "This will really tell us something and give us an idea of what we are made of. Theyre all good teams. Well have to play at our highest level." The Wizards, who trailed 28-14 after the opening quarter, made their only push in the second with George and Hibbert on the bench. They scored on 10 of their first 15 possessions and got as close as 38-34 when Trevor Booker hustled for an offensive rebound and made a layup. But Indiana allowed just two points over the final 4 1/2 minutes of the half to end the run. Hibbert scored 10 points in the third on 4-of-5 shooting after an 0-of-5 first half. Indiana shot 11-of-20 as a team in the third. NOTES: Pacers forward Danny Granger has yet to play this season due to lingering effects of a strained right calf. . NEW YORK -- Toronto FC midfielder Jonathan Osorio has been suspended two games for kicking the ball at an opponents head and Montreal Impact sporting director Nick De Santis got one game for aggressive behaviour toward game officials, Major League Soccer announced Friday. The MLS disciplinary committee banned Osorio for kicking the ball directly to the side of the head of New York Red Bulls defender Kosuke Kimura, who had fallen to the ground. Kimura was not injured on the play. The incident occurred in the 77th minute of New Yorks 2-0 victory last Saturday, which eliminated TFC from playoff contention. Osorio appeared to be trying to clear the ball out of play when Kimura fell in front of him. No foul was called, but it sparked a brief skirmish on the field. New Yorks Dax McCarty was fined for violating the hands to the face rule during the melee. The league ruled that Osorios clearance attempt "endangered the safety of an opponent." "It wasnt intentional," Osorio said after the match. "They knew that, too. "He was coming hard and I was mid-swing as he was falling. So unfortunately I hit him in his head. But he was OK and I said I was sorry." Osorio will sit out games against Sporting Kansas City on Saturday and against D.C. United next week. Red Bulls defender Jamison Olave was also fined for violent conduct from an incident with Justin Braun in the 45th minute of the same game that also went uncalled on the field. De Santis continued Montreals string of run-ins with the referees when he got one game for "continued aggressive, confrontational and irresponsible behaviour" toward officials following a 2-1 loss at home to the Columbus Crew last Saturday. It was a first suspension this year for De Santis, but first-year coach Marco Schallibaum has been suspended four times for a total of five games. LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Devin Hester is done returning kicks in Chicago. The Bears confirmed Thursday that they are parting ways with the three-time Pro Bowl pick after eight seasons, confirming what he told the NFL Network the previous day. So instead of a return to Chicago, hell hit the market as a free agent. General manager Phil Emery said it had been an honour to have Hester on the team. "While Devin has redefined the pinnacle standard of the return position in the NFL, the memories and contributions he has given us cannot be measured by stats or numbers," he said. "Not only is Devin a special player, he is also an exceptional person. He is a great teammate, husband and father. Devin represented the organization off-the-field as well as he did on it. When his career is over, he will always be a welcome member of the Bears family." Hester matched Hall of Famer Deion Sanders NFL record with his 19th return touchdown last season, tying his friend and mentor with an 81-yard punt return at Washington in October. It was Hesters 13th punt return for a TD, extending his own record in that category. He has also returned five kickoffs and a missed field goal for a touchdown. Hester is best remembered by Bears fans for returning the opening kickoff in the 2007 Super Bowl for a touchdown. He ran it back 92 yards for a score in a game won by Indianapolis. Hester endured several lulls on returns during his career, particularly when the Bears tried to make him a receiver. But he showed some of his old form while focusing solely on returns last season. Hes the second Bears star to leave the team in as many years: Last May, linebacker Brian Urlacher announced his retirement after 13 seasons, all with the Bears. The eight-time Pro Bowler and the team were unable to reach a deal a year ago and he eventually decided to call it quits. Shoes Canada Cheap . Chivas (3-10-4) got its second straight draw while extended its winless streak to 12 in the opener of a three-game road trip. "I think they are starting to play more as a team and less as individuals," Chivas coach Jose Luis Real said through a translator. Real took over at the end of May for Jose Luis Sanchez Sola. Although he is still searching for his first win as Chivas coachr, the team is showing improvement, The Goats tend to show up more against Dallas than against other opponents, and Thursday night was no different. Dallas has not defeated Chivas in six straight matches. "I dont know what it is," Real said. "I think its motivation. Obviously the players come in the game with the motivation (to take down a top team)." Dallas (8-3-7) is winless in its last five matches and sits two points behind Real Salt Lake atop the Western Conference. There were plenty of chances for both teams, though neither could take advantage. Chivas outshot Dallas 17-6, holding a 6-1 advantage on shots on goal. "I think were trying to get in the right path," Chivas midfielder Jorge Villafana said. "The thing is looking better each game. Last game we had the opportunity to get three points, we let ourselves tie it, and this time I think we did a good job coming here and getting a point in a difficult place (against) a good team." Dallas sent its first 10 shots off target, missing the goal by inches on several occasions. Chivas kept rifling shots that were blocked by Dallas defendders, including four shots in one sequence in the 54th minute.dddddddddddd Jackson nearly put Dallas on the board in the 85th minute when he headed a cross just wide of the post. One minute later, Kennedy made a toe save on Blas Perezs header. Both teams squandered stoppage-time free-kick opportunities to saddle them with a point each. Dallas had three strong scoring opportunities in the opening 10 minutes of the game, including a strong showing on early set pieces. Defender Stephen Keel, making his first start for Dallas, just missed a header six minutes in on a corner, which would have been the 30-year-olds first career MLS goal. Four minutes later, Michels left-footed free kick from about 30 yards didnt quite curl back far enough, caroming off the far post. From there, Chivas backline tightened in the middle as the visitors starting pressing up and limiting the Dallas chances to ones created on the wings. "The beginning of the first half, we were playing really well and we kind of faded in the middle of the game," Dallas defender Matt Hedges said, "and we were giving the ball away, I think, too much and not keeping enough possession. It started to be kind of a track meet back and forth." Chivas found its footing in the final 15 minutes of the first half. Eric Avila, who played for Dallas from 2008-11, had a ground shot from about 25 yards stopped by a diving Raul Fernandez in the 30th minute. Avilas attempt triggered a string of shots to end the half, including Jose Correas about-face shot from six yards out that just went wide when he found the ball off a neat back heel from Walter Vilchez following a corner. The Dallas Stars landed a big-time scorer to fit into their second-line centre spot, sending forward depth to Ottawa in return. Numbers Game looks at the Jason Spezza trade. The Stars Get: C Jason Spezza and LW Ludwig Karlsson. Spezza, 31, has been one of the premier scoring centres in the league and, since 2005-2006, only Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Alex Ovechkin, Joe Thornton and Pavel Datsyuk have a higher points-per-game than Spezzas 1.06 (611 points in 575 games). With a decided tilt towards more offensive zone starts, which makes sense given his skill set, Spezza has put up solid possession stats. In an ideal world, he would be better without the puck, but Spezza has consistently generated shots when hes on the ice. Hes also very effective on the power play, which ought to help a Dallas power play that was 23rd in the league last season, converting 15.9% of their attempts. In Dallas, Spezza should also tend to get favourable matchups, as other teams will still focus on Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn and Valeri Nichushkin on the top line. At the moment, candidates to skate on Spezzas wing should include veteran Erik Cole, prospects Colton Sceviour and Brett Ritchie as well as, if hes cleared to play, Rich Peverley. What that might indicate is that the Stars are going to still be in the market for additional help. Some of that additional help comes in the person of Spezzas winger in Ottawa at the end of last season, Ales Hemsky, who signed a three-year, $12-million deal with the Stars. Hemsky, 30, was getting miscast in Edmonton, as the Oilers turned to younger talent and cut his ice time, but joining Spezza in Ottawa at the trade deadline showed that Hemsky still has what it takes to produce when he plays with top talent. As a setup guy, Hemsky might fit with Benn and Seguin on the top line, allowing Valeri Nichushkin to slide in alongside Spezza. With one year remaining on his contract, Spezza brings a $7-million cap hit, though hes a significant bargain as his actual salary is only $4-million. Karlsson is a 6-foot-3 winger who spent most of his first pro season in the ECHL, scoring 24 points in 39 games. With the Senators taking on three players, Karlsson going the other way eases any potential pressure on Ottawas reserve list. If he materializes into a legit NHL prospect, it would come as a major surprise and probably an added kick in the teeth to the Senators, who are already giving up the clear top player in the deal. Dallas is a team on the rise and adding Spezza and Hemsky to the fold does a nice job closing the gap between the Stars and the top contenders in the Western Conference. The Senators Get: RW Alex Chiasson, C Alex Guptill, LW Nick Paul and 2nd round pick in 2015. Chiasson is a 23-year-old winger coming off a decent rookie season during which he scored 13 goals and 35 points in 79 games, with mediocre possession stats that were substantially better than his minus-21 rating would suggest, thanks to one of the lowest on-ice save percentages in the league. Thats the kind of thing that tends to bounce back, so dont write off Chiasson entirely as a defensive liability. Offensively, he broke into his NHL career with 11 goals and 54 shots on goal in 19 games (from late 2012-2013 through October 2013), and the 6-foot-3 winger looked like he might have the making of a big goal-scorer, more because he was generating a lot of shots rather than the unsustainable rate at which he was finishing, but Chiassons ice time decreased as the season went on and he scored eight goals in the final 70 games of the season. With offensive upside, its possible that Chiasson would find his way into a role with the Senators top six forwards, but there will be some competition among other offseason additions as well as the wingers already in the organization. With Clarke MacArthur and Bobby Ryan the established scorers, there will be room for competition with the likes of Mark Stone, Mike Hoffman and Mika Zibanejad, depending on the next steps for Senators GM Bryan Murray. Still on his entry-level deal, Chiasson will make $900,000 next season, which is a bargain price for a top-nine forward, particularly one that could conceivably score 20 goals in the right situation. 22-year-old Alex Guptill is a solid prospect, who scored 61 points in 69 games over his last two seasons at the University of Michigan. He joined the Texas Stars late in the season, chipping in a couple of points in five games, so hell start next season at Binghamton and get used to the pro grind. Nick Paul is a 19-year-old winger that the Stars drafted in the fourth round last summer. He has good size (6-foot-3, 200 pounds) and while he made progress in his second OHL season, scoring 26 goals and 46 points in 67 games, he was even better in the postseason, scoring 12 goals and 18 points in 22 playoff games. Both Paul and Guptill have a chance to eventually play for the Senators, but both are going to need some time before thats a realistic consideration. A second-round pick brings a little better than a one-in-three chance of yielding an NHL player. All told, this package isnt particularly sexy in exchange for the second-leading scorer in franchise history, but the Senators didnt have much leverage and have reasonable chance to get two or three NHLers out of the deal, eventually. It might be more encouraging if the Senators were going to take the cap savings from this deal and re-invest it in the teams payroll, but we will have to wait and see if anything happens in that respect before the Senators get credit for losing skill and cutting payroll. MIAMI -- San Francisco 49ers star quarterback Colin Kaepernick and two other NFL players will not faces charges in an incident involving a woman at a downtown hotel, prosecutors announced Thursday. A memo released by the Miami-Dade County State Attorneys Office said there was insufficient evidence that any crime was committed in the hotel room on April 1. Tests indicated the woman was not sexually assaulted and other evidence backed up the players contention that nothing happened. In fact, the memo by Assistant State Attorney Laura Adams described the woman as incoherent when police and fire-rescue officers responded to 911 calls to the room at the Viceroy Hotel. She had to be sedated in order to be taken to the hospital, where she was temporarily involuntarily committed for her own safety, the memo says. "When she heard the officers voices, the complainant started screaming incoherently about Jesus and devils," Adams wrote. A hotel security officer told police that when he arrived at the room, the woman began praying, "asking God to forgive her of her sins" and began screaming in words the security officer couldnt understand, according to the memo. She banged her head against the walls and started kicking uncontrollably. At the hospital, doctors noted that she was "severely agitated" and appeared to be in an altered mental state, although no evidence of drugs beyond marijuana were detected in her system, Adams wrote. The woman had told police she and the three players had drinks and smoked marijuana earlier in the night. Kaepernick consistently denied any wrongdoing. Earlier this month the 49ers gave the 26-year-old a $126 million, six-year contract extension that will keep him in San Francisco through 2020. He was drafted in 2011 in the second round out of Nevada. The other players in the room that night were 49ers wide receiver Quinton Patton, and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Ricardo Lockette. The prosecutors memo says that an attorney for Kaepernick and Lockette told investigators they met the woman about a year ago in Atlanta and that she and Kaepernick had sex. The woman later told Kaepernick she was pregnant and he cut off contact with her, including changing his phone number, the memo says. Eventually, she learned Kaepernick and Lockette would be in Miami and made arrangements to visit them, travelling by Greyhound bus. After the womans behaviour deteriorated, Kaepernick contacted a nearby friend and decided to leave the hotel. "Im leaving right now Im terrified," Kaepernick texted the friend, according to the prosecutors memo. Byron Murphy Youth Jersey . TORONTO - R.A. Dickey couldnt keep the baseball in the yard again, but ultimately the Toronto Blue Jays were done in by a faltering bullpen. After a respectable outing from Dickey, an eighth-inning implosion by veteran reliever Darren Oliver was enough to cost the Blue Jays in a 6-4 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Sunday afternoon at Rogers Centre. Oliver, who hadnt allowed a run in his past five appearances, entered with the score tied and managed to retire Home Run Derby champion Yoenis Cespedes without difficulty. The rest of his outing didnt go as smoothly. A single by As right-fielder Josh Reddick and a walk to third baseman Josh Donaldson paved the way for second baseman Alberto Callaspos two-run double, which Emilio Bonifacio almost came up with at wall in left field. Back-to-back singles by catcher Stephen Vogt and centre-fielder Coco Crisp made the Blue Jays deficit three and ended Olivers afternoon after giving up three earned runs on four hits. It was the 42-year-old Olivers second-worst appearance of the season. He allowed four runs in a memorable bullpen collapse July 23 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Fred Miller gave 13 points, five boards and five assists and Ty Greene added 11 for the Spartans (8-3), who had a three-game winning streak broken. The Terrapins were trailing by four points to start the second half, and were down by seven when Jared Nickens hit a 3-pointer that kicked off a 12-2 run with Layman capping the burst on a layup for a 38-35 lead six minutes in. Another 11-2 run allowed Maryland to create some distance, as Dammonte Dodds free throws with just over nine minutes to play gave the team a 10-point lead.dddddddddddd The Spartans kept the game from getting out of hand and cut their deficit to just four when Miller made a 3-pointer just inside of two minutes remaining. Layman, though, countered with a 3-pointer and USC Upstate didnt make a bucket the rest of the way. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- With the Anaheim Ducks bearing down on him all night, Jaroslav Halak couldnt relax for even a moment in front of the Washington Capitals net until the horn sounded on another victory. None of the Caps can afford to take many more breathers if they hope to make it back to the post-season. Alex Ovechkin scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period, and the Capitals kept up their playoff push with a 3-2 victory Tuesday night. Joel Ward and Troy Brouwer also scored for the Capitals, who have won three straight to pull into an eighth-place tie with Columbus for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They barely held off the Ducks, who threw 45 shots at Halak and pressed right up to the final seconds. "We cant worry about anything else thats going to happen except for our games," said Halak, who made 43 saves in his sixth consecutive start. "Right now, two points are all huge, any way we can get them." The Caps havent trailed during their winning streak. But even after Ovechkin scored his 46th goal early in a power play, they were in a nail-biter against Anaheim. "That was a huge game," Ovechkin said. "We prepared for it, and we were ready for it. We played one of the best teams in the league." Ovechkins goal was just the second in seven games for last seasons NHL MVP, but the Capitals need every goal and victory possible on their three-game California road trip. The Blue Jackets and Detroit, one point back in ninth place, both have two games in hand on Washington. Ben Lovejoy and Mathieu Perreault scored for the Ducks, who have lost four straight home games while falling out of first place in the overall NHL standings. Anaheim is still near the top of the Western Conference playoff race, but San Jose has caught the Ducks atop the Pacific Division standings. The teams meet Thursday at the Shark Tank. Jonas Hiller stopped 27 shots, but the Ducks have lost to the Capitals in each of their last four visits to Honda Center. "I think we had a lot of looks and were shooting the puck, but we werent getting to any loose pucks," Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said. "You can make a million and one excuses, but were just not getting the job done." Washington hadnt visited Honda Center since Feb. 16, 2011, nine months before the Capitals fired Boudreau, who was hired by Anaheim two days later. "This was a big one for Bruce, and we all knew it," Lovejoy said. "I think we came out with a lot of passion. When were skating and playing tough hockey, we get our forecheck going, and we had that going tonight. We just werent able to put more than two in the net." Ward got his 21st goal on a fat rebound just 2:11 in, scoring in his third consecutive game. Lovejoy tied it 59 seconds later on an unobstructed slap shot set up by a terrible Washington line change. Brouwer scored on a power play in the final seconds of the first period for the Caps, getting his third goal in two games off another rebound. Anaheim generated nothing from a two-man advantage for 1:51 early in the second period, adding to the power-play woes of an otherwise powerful offensive club. The Ducks entered the game in a 2-for-42 slump in their previous 13 games, and they went scoreless in their first four chances against Washington. "At the end, it came down to the fact that our special teams werent special," Lovejoy said. Perreault, the former Capitals centre, put a wrist shot past Halak, who was thoroughly screened by Patrick Maroon, to tie it right after a power play expired early in the third period. But just 1:12 later, Nicklas Backstrom won a faceoff and John Carlson got the puck to Ovechkin, who put a typically vicious one-timer past Hiller. Stephane Robidas played more than 13 minutes in his debut for the Ducks, who acquired the veteran defenceman from Dallas two weeks ago for the playoff push. Robidas filled in for Cam Fowler, who missed his second straight game with a lower-body injury. "It wasnt my best, but the first one is out of the way now," Robidas said. NOTES: Dustin Penner returned to Honda Center for the first time since Anaheim traded him to Washington on March 4. Penner had 13 goals and 19 assists in 49 games this season in his second stint with the Ducks, but was a frequent healthy scratch. ... Halak was in Anaheim with the Blues on Feb. 28 when he was traded to Buffalo, forcing him to leave Honda Center early while St. Louis faced the Ducks with a locker room attendant as their backup goalie. ... VIRGINIA WATER, England -- Rory McIlroy put aside the anguish in his private life to win the European Tours flagship BMW PGA Championship on Sunday. The double major winner came from seven shots back at the start of the final round to shoot a 6-under 66 and win by 1 stroke with an overall 14-under 274 on the Wentworth course. It was McIlroys first European Tour success since December 2012 and ends a run of eight second-place finishes in 11 events this season. Shane Lowry of Ireland came second with a round of 68 for a 13-under 275. Denmarks Thomas Bjorn (75) shared third place on 12 under with Englands two-time BMW PGA winner Luke Donald (70). McIlroys 12th victory worldwide comes four days after the 25-year old Northern Irishman confirmed the breakdown in his relationship with Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. McIlroy had been close to tears on Wednesday when talking to the media. He was still subdued Sunday despite his victory though he hugged his father Gerry and long-time coach Michael Bannon. "I guess when I got inside the ropes this week, it was a little bit of a release, and I was on my own and doing what I do best, which is playing golf, and that sort of gave me four or five hours of serenity or sanctuary or whatever you want to call it," McIlroy said. "I was just focusing on the job at hand which was to play golf and get the ball in the hole in the lowest number of shots possible ... Its obviously been a week of very mixed emotions, but Im sitting here looking at this trophy going, How the hell, how did it happen this week? But it did." It was McIlroys first success since coming from behind to win Decembers Australian Open in Sydney. He heads into next months U.S. Open as a strong contender to win the event for a second time in four years. "The win at the end of laast year in Australia sort of stopped all the questions about equipment and about struggling and slump and all this stuff," McIlroy said.dddddddddddd "But to win here, against a great field, one of the best fields of the year, especially in Europe sort of cements that, and shows where my game is and Im on the right track again. Hopefully, it wont be long before Im contending in majors and having a chance to win those again." Lowry went into the last day some five shots behind third round leader Bjorn but found himself in front when Bjorn took a triple bogey 7 at the par four No. 6. After three birdies in a row from the 10th, Lowry had his own troubles in taking a double bogey at the par four 13th. However, the former Irish Open and Portugal Masters winner regrouped to birdie the 14th and, while he dropped a shot at the next, the 26-year-old Lowry holed a 30-foot birdie at the last to secure second place on his own. "Im happy but I know I am going to be sitting in my hotel room tonight and the 13th hole is going to be going through my head," Lowry said. The 43-year-old Bjorn went into the last day with history on his side as no player had lost at this European Tour event after leading by five shots. By the ninth hole Bjorn had forfeited his advantage -- taking a bogey at No. 5, triple bogey at the sixth where he failed to get out of a greenside bunker in regulation, and dropping a further shot at the ninth. The Dane birdied the 12th but was in trouble again with bogeys at Nos. 14 and 15 before birdies at the next two holes in an eventual round of 75. "Its a disappointment when you come off the golf course like this," Bjorn said. "I just didnt get it right today and I made that massive judgment error on six and that kind of let everybody back into the frame." ' ' '

NEW YORK -- Canadas Frank Dancevic fought for more than three and a half hours before losing a marathon to Joao Sousa 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (2) to exit in his opening match at the U.S. Open on Wednesday. It was the first five-set match for the Niagara Falls, Ont. native since 2011 Wimbledon. "It was a heartbreaker, its tough losing matches like that," said Dancevic, who played with a new racquet model for the first time during the match, "It could have gone either way. It was one of those that came down to a few points." Portugals Sousa, ranked 38th, finally moved into the second round in the final-set tiebreaker, as he smashed back a weak Dancevic defensive lob to secure the win. An exhausted Dancevic, ranked 135th, finished the battle with 50 winners and 51 unforced errors, pounding down 17 aces and converting on four of 14 break chances. "When I was down 5-2 in the fifth set it looked like he was getting tight when he served for it at 5-3. I got back into the match but not quite enough. "We played really good tennis. Its unfortunate that I lost, but I feel really good about my game. ... I feel good physically. If I keep this level up I can do some damage the rest of the year." The Dancevic defeat leaves fifth seed Milos Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., as the last Canadian left in the mens competition. Wimbledon finalist and seventh seed Eugenie Bouchard, from Westmount, Que., is into the second round in the womens draw. Dancevic had chances to seize the early lead at the end of the opening set, when he found himself with five set points. But Sousa chipped away at the deficit to eventually win it. The 29-year-old stepped up his game to claim the second set, but then lost the third to trail two sets to one. In the fourth, Dancevic regained the momentum -- losing a break for 4-4 but getting it back a game later to lead 5-4. He squared the match at two sets each with a backhand pass. The fifth set provided the most dramatics as Dancevic fought back from down 2-5, forcing another tiebreaker. But luck ran out for the Canadian as Sousa found a finishing burst to advance. Dancevic said that he had to modify his strategy during the match as he had only two frames of the new racquet at his disposal. "I made the chance a few days ago, I think I played exceptionally well considering it was a new racquet and completely new strings. For me its a whole new approach to the game. "Ive trained well with it but I was unsure in some key moments. I like it though and will stick with it until the end of the year." OAKLAND, Calif. -- Now that hes a key part of the Athletics starting rotation, Drew Pomeranz has tried to maintain the same aggressive approach on the mound that he had coming out of the bullpen. Its turned out better than anyone could have hoped for so far. Making his second start of the season after replacing Dan Straily as Oaklands fourth starter, Pomeranz and three relievers combined on a four-hit shut out as the As beat the Chicago White Sox 9-0 on Tuesday night for their sixth consecutive win. "Thats that mentality, Im kind of just trying to go right after people," Pomeranz said. "Thats what I was doing out of the bullpen and I had success doing that. I dont see any reason to change that." Pomeranz (3-1) went five shutout innings in his first start on May 7 and matched that with another stellar five-inning outing against Chicago. The Athletics left-hander struck out a career-high eight, walked two and gave up just three hits -- all singles. "Thats a tough lineup to navigate through," As manager Bob Melvin said. "He strikes out the first three hitters of the game, sets the tone, and then the offence was terrific across the board." Brandon Moss homered twice and drove in five runs, Josh Reddick also homered while Yoenis Cespedes added two hits and scored twice to anchor a shuffled Oakland lineup that had catcher John Jaso batting leadoff for just the fourth time this season. Jaso had three hits and scored twice. The White Sox lost their fourth straight. "Guys swung through some pitches and (Pomeranz) pounded the strike zone," Chicago manager Robin Venture said. "We got outplayed all the way around. Nothing went right." Oakland improved to 25-15, matching its best record after 40 games since 2003. The As won their second straight over the White Sox in much the same fashion theyve put together the second-best record in the AL -- strong starting pitching and plenty of offence. Pomeranz, who replaced Dan Straily in the As rotation after Straily was optioned to the minors, blanked the White Sox through five innings and allowed only two runners to reach second base.dddddddddddd. He struck out the side twice and fanned leadoff hitter Marcus Semien three times. Dan Otero pitched two innings, Fernando Abad worked the eighth and Joe Savery handled the ninth to complete the four-hitter. That continued a stellar streak by Oakland starting pitchers. Over a six-game stretch that began when Pomeranz helped blank the Seattle Mariners, As starters are 5-0 with a 1.13 ERA. "I think we feed off of each other," Pomeranz said. "You want to keep it going. You dont want to be the guy that doesnt pitch well." The offence has been just as sharp. The As matched their season-high with 17 hits and had at least three home runs for the fourth time this season. Reddick hit a two-run home run as part of the As four-run fifth while Moss had a two-run shot in the sixth and another two-run homer in the eighth. Eight of Oaklands nine starters had at least one hit. Reddick, Moss, Cespedes, Jed Lowrie and Craig Gentry had two apiece. The As jumped on Chicago starter Scott Carroll (1-3) early then held on behind Pomeranz and the bullpen. "(Carroll) was mixing his pitches but when youre throwing a lot of strikes (hitters) can be aggressive with pitches in the zone," Moss said. "Thats what our guys were doing. Those kind of nights are fun four everybody." NOTES: 3B Josh Donaldson was given the day off by Oakland manager Bob Melvin. ...
